Fall Sugar Cookies

Friday was all about dinner, but today is all about dessert. I think everyone deserves something sweet on a Monday!

Last night Dean and I were really in the mood for cookies. I didn’t have everything I needed for my typical go-to recipes, but my craving was serious enough for me to pull out last years “100 Best Cookies” by Better Homes and Gardens. Sugar cookies are one of my favorites so when I came across the title of ” ‘The Best’ Sugar Cookies ” my decision was made.

2/3 cup butter
3/4 cup sugar
1 tsp baking powder
3/4 tsp salt
1 egg
1 tbsp milk
1 tsp vanilla
2 cups all-purpose flour

They were super simple to make.  I used my mixer to beat the butter first, and then I added in my sugar, baking powder and salt. When they were blended, I added in an egg and the vanilla. Last I slowly mixed in the flour.  When I was done, I cut my dough in half, covered them and stuck them in the fridge until I was done cleaning up the mess I made.  (The recipe calls for a half hour fridge time.)

Using my new cookie cutter made me happy!

I’m typically not very good at rolling out dough, but I was impressed with how easy this dough was to work with. Since it can now be considered fall, I decided to use my new pumpkin cookie cutter (~$3 – thank you Christmas Tree Shop!).

All in all the cookies were super easy to make, but I wouldn’t call them “the best”. That was a brave move, BHG! They were a little too floury for my taste and super dense…Think of a sugar cookie mixed with a shortbread cookie.  If I make them again I will definitely play with the recipe a bit to try and lighten them up and add more flavor.

Yum. Cinnamon.
To finish them up I sprinkled some cinnamon and some pumpkin sprinkles on top. After my first batch came out of the oven and I realized how plain they were, I starting putting a bit more cinnamon on the cookies before they made it into the oven. I thought those tasted much better!
What’s your favorite kind of cookie?

    • Me too! I love fall! I do suggest making a few edits to the recipe. I would probably add a bit more butter to make them a little creamier (I was surprised to see that it used less than a full cup anyway!). Depends on what kind of cookie you like!

  1. As simple as they are, sugar cookies are my absolutely favorite (only behind chocolate chip, of course). They just feel special when you make them. I love the little fall theme yours have. Love your blog–I’m your newest Bloglovin’ follower!
