Doing Good: Small Can Be Big

doing good

It’s been a while since we’ve seen a doing good post around here, but I promise you that plenty of people have been doing good! Want to join in? Check out the site Small Can Be Big!

My friend, Joe Casabona, showed me this site recently, and it’s doing such cool things! Non-profits are able to identify local families in “urgent need of specific, one-time financial help” and they are able to turn to to help the families find financial assistance. The situation of each family is different. Sometimes you may be helping a family pay a bill, take a stand against domestic violence, or help with medical costs, and the best news is that 100% of what you donate will go to the family. Not a percentage. The full amount raised. Whether you can donate $5 or $500, you know that you’re making a difference every time. Here’s how the site got started: was founded by Boathouse Group, Inc. to address a developing homeless crisis in Massachusetts. In the summer of 2008—a time of year when homelessness is usually in decline—the number of homeless across the state reached an all-time high.

When confronting systemic issues like homelessness, philanthropic organizations often fail to consider critical, limited resources such as time and talent. Boathouse—already experts at launching campaigns, creating content, and developing strategy and technology for clients—decided to tackle this local surge in homelessness by using the skills and talents already in their own backyard.

Together, the team at Boathouse developed as a “simple solution to a complex problem.” As a model for giving, it provides a better way for people to do what they always do best in a crisis: help one another. By harnessing the power of small, direct donations, and donors like you can make a big difference for families living on the edge.

I try my best to donate what I can every holiday season. This year I’m exited to give directly to someone instead of a larger company or agency. It’s empowering for all involved! Want to learn more?
