Pinteresting Kitchens

kitchen organization inspiration

If you follow me on Pinterest you probably already know that I’m currently trying to organize our kitchen. While most of our apartment is roomy and wonderful, our kitchen just wasn’t so lucky. Its small and has minimal cabinet space and even less of a counter top. Dean always talks about some roomy kitchen being on his “must have” list every time we move… this time it’s clear that he had to give a little.

Our previous two apartments had a solid amount of kitchen space. Actually, our last kitchen had SO much space that we felt like we had to get more stuff just to fill it. Now we had to buy 3 storage/utility pieces from Ikea just to empty out our boxes and things are all over the place. Have you ever noticed how much more cluttered a space feels when it’s unorganized? If you haven’t, I’ll have you over for coffee sometimes so you can get a feel for it.

I’ll post our winning solution when we’re all done, but for now here are some of my favorite inspiration photos.

I love the fact that this example not only hangs items inside the cabinet door, but the extra cork board backing also lets you use the door to attach various memos. I’m picturing cabinets littered with favorite recipes and kitchen tips in the best way possible.

Even though Dean doesn’t want to admit it, we really need to go to the Container Store. Imagine all of the upper cabinet space you could neatly fill with little shelves like these?

This picture almost makes me want to pull out some chalkboard paint- almost. If I wasn’t renting I’d probably do it, but from experience I’ll let you know that it’s kind of a pain to cover up. But I digress- what I really love about this kitchen is that they use their wall space. Instead of letting cooking utensils and paper towels take up important counter top space, they decided to spread the kitchen a little wider and look up.

Open shelves are another great way to use your vertical space. I love that almost anything could go on these shelves- plates, bowls, baking supplies, baskets, a microwave- anything to free up your prep-space.

We had one in our old apartment and it was seriously a godsend. Just like the open shelving concept above, this unit lets you keep some of your most used kitchen gadgets within reach, but it still allows them all to be put away when not in use. It’s probably the single kitchen item I miss the most from our last apartment and if we had the room she totally would have made the move with us.

This easy diy bag organizer makes me feel terrible about throwing away my last coffee can. We use our plastic bags when cleaning up after Allegra, so we do keep and reuse any that we receive. That being said, our collection is a little out of control. Something like this could really help us save space in the pantry.

I think I have something planned for pots/pans and a few other things, but I’m still lost on my tupperwear. The lids always seem to be in the way. Tips are welcomed!

Get Artsy With Blind Contours

blind contourMany people would be surprised to know that I took a few art courses in college. I use the word “surprised” because I’m a pretty terrible artist (even with the classes under my belt. But I did learn one nifty skill that has given me many hours of entertainment- the blind contour.
According to creativeglossary.com, a blind contour is defined as “a line drawing that is created without the use of constantly looking at the paper.  Instead, one concentrates intensely on the item that he/she is drawing and tries to draw the many shifts of lines and tangents of lines seen“.  So basically you stare intently at people and draw them without peeking at your paper.Take your time and really work to follow the lines of each and every facial feature-the results are sooo entertaining! We used giant paper in class and the final products proved to be wonderful/hilarious additions to any home.

I’ve used this trick at quite a few college get-togethers, random meetings, and nights in with friends. Give it a try and let me know how your art turns out!

ETSY SHOP: Survey & a free printable!

ME & YOU- free print

So you know that I recently started an Etsy shop, right? Well last week I had my first sale & this week I have a new deal in the making- yahoo! I’m so excited and super motivated to create more!

Dean was recently asked to be a best man in a wedding next year, so I’ve started playing around with some little lovey prints first. It started as a simple gift idea, but now I’m thinking maybe other people would be interested too! But here’s where you come in: What about you? Would you be interested in buying these kinds of things?

Here’s a simple print that I made as an example. This one is FREE for you, my favorite reader and friend. Want it customized? Let me know and we’ll chat about some options. I’m thinking that I can put downloadable prints for something super reasonable, maybe $4 for an instant print. Then it ups to $6 for the same download but with 2 customized names (instead of me and you)….. additional customizations TBD. So help me out- would you buy something like this?

A day off

weekend photos

In full lazy weekend fashion, I spent the last 2 days….

  • Playing Catan
  • Brunching and enjoying an amazing Bloody Mary
  • Knitting
  • Visiting friends and their newest, cutest addition
  • Trying to keep Allegra busy

I took off today as well so that we can get things done around the house. You can also think of it as spending the day in solidarity for Dean’s sister’s birthday. Happy birthday, Steph! We hope you have an AMAZING day. See you next week!

Plan a Girls Night In

best friend/ girls night ideas

I was lucky enough to spend a wholeeeeeee day with my best friend this week. We went to middle school, high school and college together, but unfortunately we now live in different states. While I love getting together with my girl friends, I think we get so excited to see each other that we’re always trying to plan something big. We wanna eat a great dinner, go bar hopping, and explore. But you know what? Sometimes all you need is a great night in with your girls. So while Bahar and I were hanging out in my hotel room digesting our food and discussing our wine choices, we decided to put together a little list for fun Girls Night In ideas.

Girls night ideas

  • Drink wine
I don’t think we really need an excuse for this one. What kind of night doesn’t call for wine?
  • Makeovers and nail painting
We already know that most of us spend some seriously time doing makeovers and painting nails when we’re on our own, why wouldn’t we want to do that together? There’s nothing like laughing with a green face mask on.
  • Rent a movie
I have a running list of movies that I want to watch but Dean refuses to watch with me. Stock up on some popcorn and throw on something great from your Netflix que.
  • Try a new recipe
Maybe you’re looking for a dinner idea or maybe you have a sweet tooth, either way there are tons of recipes that could make for a hilarious time in the kitchen. You can try decorating your own cupcakes or creating a recipe of your own!
  • Do a clothing swap
I don’t know about you, but I feel like I’m always looking for an excuse to clean out my closet. I love cleaning it out even more if I know it will result in room for even more clothes. Have everyone bring down a few pieces that they no longer wear (but are still in good shape) and make some trades!
  • Make a craft
Take some time to scour Pinterest for your favorite DIY ideas.  You can paint a glass, plant some succulents,  make your own body scrub…. the options are endless!
  • Play a game
There are soooo many fun games for adults to play! Whether you’re pulling out a board game or a deck of cards, your guaranteed a good laugh.

What did you ladies do during your last girls night?
